Question by : what is required to become a machinist and how old do you have to be?
my main question is how old do you have to be, i’m guessing either 18 or 21 but i could be wrong. my other main question is do you need any special training and how do you become an apprentice and also do you have to pay for an apprenticeship? i’m currently in highschool and yesterday while contemplating what kind of job i want to have for much of my life i decided on either a machinist or a welder. i decided on either of these because i love to work with metal and machines (what i mean by “either” is that welding would be a backup job incase machinist doesn’t work out for me). do they typically make good money? also, does utah yield any jobs in this field?
right now i’m 16 and i’m sure this is what i want to do, i need to look into this and plan my career so i need serious answers and advice.

You need to finish high school unless your school allows you to go to trade school in the last years. I would choose both. Why? I started as a welder, I went to tech school for welding. I had basic machining in high school. The shop I worked in as a weldor had an opening in machining I took it and the “old guys” took me under their wing. The best thing I ever did! The machining knowledge helps for welding and the welding knowledge helps for machining. The machining knowledge made me a better weldor by knowing how the weldment moves I can compensate to help the machinist. As for Utah go to http://www.monster.com/ and type in welding or weld in the search field and your location that will give you jobs that are available now. But it will change by the time you get out. They both pay good depending on where you go. Welding pays more when you get certified. The more certs the more money! You might want to look at these sites for welding. Good luck!
